Our Journey

Our story began in October 2023 when our first members rolled up their sleeves and set to work on our premises. This hard work culminated in the grand opening of the South Woodham Ferrers Men’s Shed on 4th April 2024. The original spark for the project came from our local mentor Doug Green and the Mister Gees Foundation, to whom we remain incredibly grateful—they generously secured our premises for the first two years and helped breathe life into the Shed.

At our official opening, Town Mayor Councillor Donna Eley had the honour of cutting the ribbon, marking the start of an exciting journey. Our then-Chair, David Shea, shared heartfelt thanks with the community for their unwavering support.

Growing Forward

We originally intended to launch as both the SWF Community Hub and a Men’s Shed. While momentum for the broader Hub was initially quiet, we are thrilled that interest has returned, but it still need more work. If you are curious about getting involved and helping shape this space, we’d love to hear from you.

Since our initial lease ended in June 2025, we have taken full responsibility for the site. Running a space like this comes with significant costs, and we are working tirelessly to secure grants and sponsorships. Quite simply, we couldn't keep the Shed running without the invaluable support of our community.

We are proud to now be a registered charity (1214615) with five dedicated Trustees. However, a charity thrives on fresh ideas, and we are actively encouraging new committee members to step into key roles. Our AGM takes place every June—but you are welcome to reach out, get involved, and contribute at any time!

Community Conservation:

Meet the Hedgehog Man As part of our commitment to the local environment under the Hedgehog SWF project, we open our doors to the public on the first Tuesday of every month for a special wildlife drop-in. Come down to the Shed to meet our resident 'Hedgehog Man'! He is on hand to offer expert help and advice on hedgehog care and garden safety. Whether you want to learn how to get involved in creating a vital hedgehog highway right here in South Woodham Ferrers, or you are interested in one of our handmade wooden hedgehog houses, or get him to give your group a talk, then he would love to chat.

Who is SWF Shed For?

You might hear "Men's Shed" and think it is strictly for men. We want to change that! We passionately believe this community space should be open to everyone. We need individuals of all genders to join us and help fully transition the Shed into an inclusive Community Hub. If you are interested in helping us open the doors to all, please get in touch as soon as possible.

Facilities & Room Hire

To make the most of our building, we actively encourage the community to use our rooms when the Shedders are off-duty.

Our meeting rooms are accessible to everyone, regardless of age or gender, and can be booked for mornings, afternoons, evenings, or full-day sessions.

• Privacy: Our meeting rooms are entirely private. Unless you book the back room while the Men's Shed is actively operating, you will not have to mix with gym visitors or other events.
• Amenities: Visitors have access to two kitchenette areas and an accessible disabled toilet.
• House Rules: To keep the environment safe and welcoming, we operate a strict no alcohol, no smoking, and no pets policy (guide dogs are warmly permitted).
